Mite Control & Eradication

Barely visible to the naked eye, mites are a broad category of pests that do a variety of damage. Some mites feed on stored grain and cheese products, while others are biting pests. Bites are small and usually not painful, producing only mild skin irritation. Frequent itching caused by mites may lead to more serious bacterial infections. On the other hand, dust mites are one of the most common allergens and can even trigger asthma attacks.

How mites get into the house or garden depends on their species. Clover mites often exploit tiny cracks to enter homes by the thousands. Well-fertilised lawns with fruit trees or gardens attract them. Other types, like dust mites are almost always found inside homes, while rodent or bird mites attach themselves to hosts and hitchhike into homes on people and pets.

Mite signs depend greatly on the species of mite. Most are difficult to see clearly without magnification. However, their movement across a surface can sometimes be detected.

Some species of plant-feeding mites produce webbing and silk like spider mites. They also can cause discolouration of leaves and eventually leaf drop. Other mites like the clover mite can easily be seen due to their bright red coloration.

Often, mites can be a sign of another pest issue, please do not delay in seeking advice if you think you are experiencing problems with mites.

Species of Mite

Below are some of the most common mite species that you may come across in your property;

  • Dust mite - Most houses have these as they live on our mattresses, feeding on particles of shed skin. Too many can become a problem.

  • Bird mite - Frequently enter houses from old nests of sparrows, starlings or house martins, or from poultry.

  • Harvest mite - May bite people if brought in on the coats of dogs or on clothing. It is best to treat harvest mites as early as possible.

  • Red spider mite - The most conspicuous mite that enters houses. A plant feeder which comes indoors in spring to seek egg-laying sites and again in autumn to hibernate.

  • Flour mite - Infests damp cereals or pasta and causes 'grocer’s itch', in people who handle infested commodities.

Mites are not insects but are arachnids, related to spiders. The typical mite emerges from its tiny egg in a dark crevice as a six-legged nymph, growing by a series of moults and acquiring another pair of legs in the process. Some species can survive starvation for up to six months.

Identifying the type of mite that you're experiencing problems with is essential to overcome any infestation. Mites may prefer to stay hidden in cracks and crevices, meaning spotting them can sometimes be difficult.
