Rat Species & Signs
Have you found gnaw marks or come across small dark brown droppings? If so then you could potentially have a rat infestation – but don’t worry we're here to help. If you think you have a possible rat infestation please call us now to speak to our experts about our fast effective rat control treatments.
Rats are most active during the night therefore it is often easier to spot the signs of a rat infestation than the actual rat. Below we have explained some signs that could indicate that you have a potential rat problem.
-
Gnawing - Rats are agile climbers and often found in lofts. You might notice gnaw marks on wires, cabling or items stored in the loft.
-
Rat droppings - Rat droppings are dark brown in a tapered, spindle shape. Approximately 3/4 inch long and 1/4 inch thick.
-
Smear marks - Grease and dirt on their bodies leaves smudges on surfaces. Smear marks can be found on walls & surfaces.
-
Footprints - Rats leave foot and tail marks in dusty, less-used areas of buildings.
-
Burrows - Brown rats are well known for digging extensive burrow systems for shelter, food storage and nesting.
-
Rat nests - Rats will shred available materials such as loft insulation, cardboard and other soft items. These are used to make nests.
There are two rat species that cause concern in the UK. The brown rat (common rat) & the black rat. Generally in the North West, you will only come across black rats around the dockland areas of Liverpool.
Both brown & black rats need access to water as part of their diet. Rats are neophobic (scared of new objects), bear this in mind when trying to overcome any rat infestation. Due to this, if you have an issue with rats inside your property then it is likely that they are able to come and go freely and any points of ingress must be identified as a priority.
Solutions to Control Rats
Our trained technicians provide safe, effective solutions to get rid of rats using industry-leading treatments. One of the quickest and most effective ways to control rats is with rodenticides & traps. We have a large selection of rodenticides suitable for use indoors and out, in a wide variety of formulations too. Rodenticides are used as part of a planned programme of anti–pest activity and regular monitoring. We'll put a schedule of visits in place designed to effectively take care of your rat problem with the minimum of disruption.
We believe that prevention is better than cure & we always aim to deny rats access into your property as opposed to simply killing them once they're in.
